Visual Stimulus Comprehension EX

*Visuals can be a picteures on their own or combined with words to convey meaning.

*Symbols, signs, maps, diagrams and storyboards use visuals for a purpose.
*All visuals contain a message. The message could be interpreted as a story,a warning,
an advertisement or as information to educate or influence people to buy something or to take some action.

Understanding Symbols and Signs

*
Symbols are internationally recognised visuals with a clear message.
*They are understood by people everywhere, no matter what language they speak.
Look at these familiar symbols used at airports, on road signs, etc, and their meanings.

*Signs use symbols, colors, words or numbers to convey a message.
*Read signs can be a warning for driver safety (yellow signs),
orders to be followed
(red signs), or additional information (green signs).
*A sign with a cross through it signifies something cannot be done.

Sign

sign is a representation of an object that implies a connection between itself and its object. A natural sign bears a causal relation to its object—for instance, thunder is a sign of storm. A conventional sign signifies by agreement, as a full stop signifies the end of a sentence. (This is in contrast to asymbol which stands for another thing, as a flag may be a symbol of a nation).
Door sign
The way a sign signifies is called semiosis which is a topic of semiotics and philosophy of language.
How a sign is perceived depends upon what is intended or expressed in the semiotic relationship of:
  • Signification
  • Significance (i.e. meaning)
  • Importance
Thus, for example, people may speak of the significance of events, the signification of characters, the meaning of sentences, or the import of a communication. Different ways of relating signs to their objects are called modes of signification.
Uses of conventional signs are varied. Usually the goal is to elicit a response or simply inform. That can be achieved by marking something, displaying a message (i.e. a notice), drawing attention or presenting evidence of an underlying cause (for instance, medical symptoms signify a disease), performing a bodily gesture, etc.

Study  this  diagram  which  shows  the  parts  of  a  hot  air  bollon.  Complete  the description of its parts given below .

The largest and most colourful part of the balloon is called the 1 Envelope. The topmost part of the balloon has a large hole which is used to deflate the balloon on landing. This is called the 2 Parachute valve. The valve seals the hole. The lowest end of the envelope is the 3 Skirt made of flame-resistant material. It helps keep the flame directed straight up into the envelope.
To pull the parachute down out of the hole via pulleys, the pilot uses the 4 parachute valve cord that helps the pilot deflate the balloon. 5 Gores are panels of fabric sewn together to form the shape of the balloon.
During the fight, the passengers and the pilot stand in the 6 Wicker Basket made from woven willow branches for lightness, strength and flexibility. The 7 Burners, usually made of stainless steel, are connected to the basket with steel cords. It is fuelled by 8 Propane Tanks as propane as gas is an efficient fuel and creates a stronger flame.

11.    Tree  are  Great

Trees are great, they just stand and wait

They don’t cry when they’re teased

They don’t eat much and thy seldom shout

Trees are easily pleased

Trees are great, they like to congregate

For meetings in the park

They dance and sway, they stay all day
And talk till well after dark
Trees are great, they accept their fate
When it’s pouring down with rain
They don’t wear macs, it runs off their backs
But you never hear them complain
So answer me, please, if there weren’t any trees
Where would naughty boys climb?
Where would lovers carve their names?
Where would little birds nest?
Where would we hang the leaves?

10.   The  Stars  and  Stripes

Thirteen American colonies went to war on 4 July, 1776. They wanted the right to run their own country. They knew they needed a flag of their own, but they did not have time to think about one.
A year later, the war had not ended. Yet, people began to design a new flag anyway. Part of it would be blue with thirteen white stars. The rest of the flag would be even more striking. It would have thirteen red and white stripes. Each star and each stripe represented a colony.
Finally, the war ended. A new country was beginning to take shape and grow. The first official national flag, also known as the Stars and Stripes, was approved by the Congress in 1777. After Vermont and Kentucky were admitted to the Union in the 1790s, two more stars and two more stripes were added in 1795. The fifteen-star, fifteen-stripe flag was the “stars-spangled banner” that inspired lawyer Francis Scott Key to write the poem that later became the US national anthem.
More states were formed. So, more stars and stripes were included into the flag that could hardly find room for these additions. In 1818, Congress passed a new law. It was decided that the flag would have only thirteen stripes but the number of stars could be increased according to the number of states.
The flag of the United States has changed several times since 1777. The last new star, bringing the total to fifty, was added after Hawai became a state. But the colours remain the same now as they were then-red, white and blue.

The Harry Potter books are a series of seven fantasy novels by British writer J.K. Rowing. The books depict a world of witches and wizards with the central character being the young wizard, Harry Potter. Most of the action takes place in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizard and focuses on Harry Potter’s struggle against the evil wizard, Lord Voldemort. The books deal with the themes of friendship, ambition, choice, courage, growing up, love and death.
In 1990, J.K. Rowing was on a crowed train from Manchester to London when the idea for Harry simply walked into her head. But she took almost six years to finish her first novel - Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone- which was published in the United Kingdom in July 1997. The book was renamed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for the American market. The last book - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- was released on July 2007.
Each book describes one year in Harry’s life at Hogwarts, where he learns to use magic and brew potions. The wizarding world in which Harry finds himself is a collection of hidden streets, lonely country manors and castles that remain invisible to the large non-magical population known as “Muggles”. It is also a world of elves and ghosts, dragons and monsters, owls and flying broomsticks, a world where the Hogwarts Express departs from Platform 9 ¾.
J.K. Rowling’s series of books has won many awards including the Hugo Award for the Best Novel. The seven books released have collectively sold more than 300 million copies and been translated into ninety three languages. 1.7  Reading  Comprehension

Who  is  more  powerful ?

There was a Traveller who set out on a long journey to a distant land.

He marched along deserted roads, whistling a tune to himself. He wore a thick, brown cloak and a black scarf. He looked up at early morning sky. The sun’s pink radiance seemed to smile down at him. He felt a gentle wind against his cheeks and it ruffled his hair.
“What a beautiful morning!” he said to himself and walked on cheerily.
The north Wind shook the heads of wayside bluebells and daisies. He was in very good mood that morning too. He blew out a greeting to the sun, “Hello Sunshine! How are you doing this fine day?”
Was fine as the day I am painting with my pretty rainbow rays!”
The North Wind drew his breath in sharply. He whistled up the sloping road and shock the silver birches that lined the path.
“Hmmm. It is obvious you have not noted my presence. Today is such a fine day because I fan the leaves and stroke the blades of grass with my feather light touch,” He declared.
The Sun snorted aloud. “What’s the world without the Sun? There will be no day or night without me. In fact, there will be no life itself if I go away.” The wind was annoyed. He did not want to be surpassed in his actions. “Not so fast. Without me, there will be no movement. All life will come to standstill. Without me, no one can even breathe, “he argued in a loud, harsh voice. Their conversation got hotter and shriller. Neither of them wanted to surrender their importance. Their quarrel over who was more powerful, soon took an unpleasant turn. A challenge was thrown. Each had to prove who was more powerful. Nothing less would solve the matter.
Meanwhile the Traveller had stopped under the shade of a tree for a bit of rest. The Sun and the Wind looked down at him.
“Let us test our strength on him.” suggested the Sun. “He is the stronger who can strip the Traveler of his cloak, “he challenged with a wink of a sparking eye.
“Very well,” growled the North Wing, and at once sent a cold, howling blast against the Traveler.
He blew up a storm of dry leaves from under the shade of the tree. The tree swayed furiously and the dust in the air stung the eyes of the Traveler.
He got up and brushed off the dry leaves stuck to his cloak. He did not know he was shortly to become the centre of a mighty storm.
The North Wind began to blow stronger and harder. He rushed and pushed, roared and howled. The Traveler began to feel cold. He gathered the ends of his cloak and drew it close to his body. He tied the scarf tightly around his neck and trudged on. The North Wind grew red in the face as he whistled and shrieked around the Traveler. All his efforts went in vain. The Traveller only hunched his body up against the wind and dragged himself forward. He just would not take off the cloak. “Oh, alright, alright! This Traveler is too stubborn for comfort. You try if you want, “said the Wind to the Sun and he took himself up to the skies.
The Sun pushed through the dark clouds and shone down at the Traveller. He began to glow brighter and hotter. Everything shimmered around the Traveller. Even the road seemed to shine like a mirror.
The searing heat began to trouble the Traveller. Beads of perspiration stood out on his forehead. It trickled down his neck and wet his scarf. The Traveller loosened the knots and tugged off his scarf. Soon he felt the sweat running down his back. He untied his cloak and threw himself down another tree.
“Ah, much better!” he said to himself as he wiped his forehead. “Aha!” laughed the Sun. “What do you say to that, my friend?” he said the Wind. “The cloak has been removed!” he chuckled loudly.
The Wind grew quiet. He knew the right strategy had worked.
“I accept, O Sun, that you are more powerful,” he said in a controlled voice. Once again, the sun shone with comfortable warmth and the wind blew gently about. The Traveller whistled a merry tune and continued on his journey.
